Warsaw High School Seniors Awarded Dr. Howard and Helen Liebengood Scholarship

Warsaw High School Seniors Awarded Dr. Howard and Helen Liebengood Scholarship

The late Dr. Howard “Doc” Liebengood and his wife Helen established a fund with the Community Foundation of Wabash County in 2007 to provide scholarships to Warsaw Community High School (WCHS) students who are graduating in the top 20 percent of the senior class.

To be eligible, students must be pursuing higher education either full or part time from any accredited university or college.  Along with an application, students are required to submit a proof of financial need form from the college or university they plan to attend.  Students who have previously been awarded the scholarship may reapply each year they are in college after the initial award, if they maintain at least a 2.5/4.0 GPA at the accredited university or college.

The Liebengood’s were proud to be able to give back to their community and since 2007, the   Dr. Howard and Helen Liebengood Scholarship has awarded $74,750 in scholarships.  This year, $17,500 was awarded to WCHS seniors and renewals.  Recipients from WCHS were Tiffany Tat and Sharayaha Raisler.

Doc and Helen had a desire to give back to the community they loved living in for over 40 years.  In addition to their scholarship fund, they also set up several other funds through the Foundation to give back to their local community, through 4-H, the Kosciusko County Animal Shelter, and local churches to provide help to those in need.

Applications for the Dr. Howard and Helen Liebengood Scholarship for students graduating in 2012 will be available at www.cfwabash.org in the fall of 2011.  Please contact the Warsaw Community High School guidance office or Foundation Program Assistant Cathy McCarty at 260-982-4824 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Dr. Liebengood moved to Silver Lake in 1967 and lived there until his death in July 2008. Liebengood operated a veterinary practice that involved preparing and certifying cattle for national and international shipment. Before moving to Silver Lake, he was a co-founder and charter member of the Michiana Veterinary Association.
