Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship

2012 LECS Application

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program is designed to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana and to increase Indiana’s community foundations’ ability to enhance the quality of life of the state’s residents.  The program provides funds for Indiana community foundations to offer scholarships to students in counties served by the foundations.  Wabash County can select one Lilly Scholar in 2012.  This number is based on the population figures for Wabash County and Lilly Endowment guidelines.

 

The program will provide scholarships for full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis, leading to a baccalaureate degree at any Indiana public or private college or university accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.  The recipient of this prestigious award will be known as a Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

 

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

 

     ·    Be a current resident of Wabash County, Indiana, and if required, provide proof of county residency for every semester of junior and senior years of high school.     

     ·    Have graduated during the current academic year (2011-2012) but no later than June 30, 2012 with a diploma from an accredited Indiana high school.

     ·    Be accepted to pursue a full time baccalaureate course of study beginning in the fall of 2012 as a first-time freshman at an accredited Indiana college or university.  Final notification of selected school is due to the Community Foundation of Wabash County by May 2, 2012. 

     ·    GPA equivalent to 8.0 or better on a 12.0 point system.

 

A parent, grandparent, child, step-child, grandchild, great grandchild, spouse, brother, sister, brother-in-law, or sister-in-law of someone who, during the last five years, has served as a member of the Scholarship Committee, Board, or Staff of the Community Foundation of Wabash County, is NOT eligible for a Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship.  Spouses of everyone listed previously are also ineligible.

 

Applicants will be evaluated on the following criteria:

 

     ·    Exhibits an appreciation and understanding of the value of education and the potential to succeed in college.

     ·    Exhibits achievement in academics, extra-curricular activities, community service, and/or work.

     ·    Exhibits good character, maturity, and leadership abilities.

      ·    Has demonstrated a commitment to imporving quality of life in the community through volunteer and service activities.

     ·    Other considerations include family financial factors, any unusual circumstances, and status as a potential first-generation college graduate.
